Air Compressor - Patient Instructions

The air compressor is used to create a flow of humidified air for patient use. Air and humidity are regulated by the adjustable pressure gauge located on the air compressor front panel, and the numbered adjustment knob located at the top of the humidity bottle. Supplemental oxygen can also be added to meet your needs if required.

Equipment Set Up

1. Place the unit on a hard, flat surface away from walls, furniture, draperies, etc.
2. Plug the power cord into a grounded electrical outlet.
3. Attach the appropriate device (humidifier, tubing, mask or tracheotomy collar) to the air outlet.
4. Turn the power switch to the on position.
5. Regulate the pressure by turning the pressure knob clockwise to increase flow and counterclockwise to decrease flow; measure pressure by reading the needle on the pressure gauge. Use the lock ring to lock in the correct pressure level. Your pressure reading is to be set at the level prescribed by your physician and was noted by your delivery technician.
6. Adjust numbered knob at the top of the humidifier bottle to set desired amount of humidity. Turn knob to decrease or increase humidity output. Your humidity adjustment should be set at the level prescribed by your physician and was noted by
7. If you are using oxygen with your air compressor: attach oxygen adapter to humidity bottle, then connect oxygen tubing to adapter. Adjust your oxygen source to                           LPM. Attach aerosol tubing and mask to oxygen adapter.
8. Place aerosol mask comfortably around your face or tracheotomy tube. Adjust elastic strap to hold mask in place.
9. Use your air compressor according to your doctor’s orders.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

This cleaning procedure is a very important part of your home pulmonary care. Keeping your equipment free of dirt and germs will eliminate the possibility of infection in your lungs caused from your equipment.

Once a Day

1. Disconnect hose, mask and disassemble nebulizer.
2. Wash all parts with warm soapy water.
3. Rinse all parts with very warm running water.
4. Soak all parts in solution of 1-part white distilled vinegar and 3 parts water for 60 minutes.
5. Remove and rinse thoroughly with warm running water.
6. Shake off excess water and drain humidifier and mask.
7. Remove as much water as possible and hang up tubing to dry.
8. Store equipment in plastic bag in dust free area.

Weekly

1. Unplug the air compressor from the wall outlet and wipe outside of unit with a damp cloth.
2. Clean air filter by rinsing in warm water and drying with a paper towel.

Bi-Weekly

1. Change Control III disinfectant if used.

Troubleshooting

1.  If the machine does not turn on:
   • Check that the power cord is plugged in.
   • Make sure there is power to the outlet you are using.
2. If there is no mist noted:
   • Check all connections to make sure they are tight.
   • Check water level in aerosol bottle.
   • Check aerosol compressor setting.
   • Replace aerosol bottle if indicated.
3. Contact MedCare Equipment Company if unit is still not functioning.

Important Points to Remember

1. Keep the air compressor and supplies clean.
2. Do Not make changes in the way you use the equipment without speaking to your doctor.
3. In between cleaning if it is necessary to add more water to the aerosol bottle, empty all of the ‘old’ water before adding the ‘new’ water.
4. Tubing should be kept clear of accumulated moisture. Any moisture which collects in the tubing should be emptied into a sink or container.

Important Safety Requirements

1. Never use this unit if it has a damaged cord or plug, never use an extension cord when operating this unit.
2. Always operate the compressor on a hard surface, like a table. Do not block the air opening by using it on a soft surface, examples include: a bed or couch.
3. Never use this unit while bathing or around water. Do not place unit where it can fall or be pulled into a tub or sink.
4. Never place unit in or drop into water. Do not reach for a unit that has fallen into water. Unplug unit immediately.
5. Do not modify the equipment in any way. Maintenance must be performed only by a certified repairperson or authorized dealer.
